As someone who participates in selling information, I have encountered many people who ask for my products for free. How do I recommend you handle this? If they are friends and family you can make that decision for yourself. If you are doing a special promotion where you are giving your product away for free that is a different situation. In this scenario I am referring to people that you do not know that contact you randomly and ask if you can give them your product at no cost.
On a regular basis someone contacts me requesting that I give away my course to them for free. Actually, this happens to me almost daily. Typically, the exchange will go as follows, "I just figured I would give it a shot. I was wondering if I could get your product for free?" While I normally do not respond in the way I am tempted to respond, I often wonder what that person would think about me if I came to his or her house asking for free stuff? Or if I waltzed into her place of work and asked her to give me what she sells at her job free of charge? Of course if I did that, the answer would be no. Yet people still ask me for my products for free. I always respond that they need to pay for them so they will value it. Besides that, I do spend time and money on my products, so I too need to make a profit.
If you look on my hard drive on my computer you will find a number of ebooks that I have never read. Do you know why? It is because the creators of these ebooks were not selling information, they were giving it away for free. If I had to pay for that information I would have placed a higher urgency and priority on it. Since I got it for free, there was no sense or urgency.
This is a topic that I can talk about all day and what is funny is that I get these requests almost every day. There are even some people who have suggested I give them my product for free and if and when they make money, they will pay me back. This is of course a silly concept because they have nothing invested into the product. If they got the product for free, there would be no need to implement the concepts, so I would basically just give my products away for free without anything in return. I have to earn a living as well and the way I do that is by selling information that I am passionate about. Also, the fact of the matter is I have invested significant time and knowledge into the products that I offer. The bottom line is if people have to spend money and invest into an information product they will typically have a much greater chance of using the product and getting value out of it.
Here is my business model. Thousands, if not millions of people are searching online for how to make money. They want to find the fastest and most effective way to do so. They want a step-by-step process for how to do this. I know this and I build my products like this. If you understand this regardless of what market you get into, you will be successful because people will be attracted to your products. This is the key to success when you are selling information.
